I got a chance to sit down with Noel Lee of Monster at a press preview in New York earlier this month, where I asked him for more details on what his company’s Pure Monster Sound™ really is. This is what he said:
Pure Monster Sound™ is kind of what we did after I did all the Beats stuff. We learned in phases. First up we got the low bass out of the headphones, and that’s what revolutionized. That’s what your kids want to hear, as bass is what moves you – whether you’re exercising or dancing – you gotta hear that low end. We did that with all of the Beats products; then we said, “What’s next besides the tight bass? And that’s when we said, “Let’s work on the mids, highs and the transparency of the sounds. Articulation, inner details, all of that became important in the R&D. So if there’s a violin and a draw across the strings of the bow, the goal was to hear it, or the pick of a guitar, to hear how the strings hit. And with vocalists like Alicia to feel as if you’re up close and up front. I started to look at the technology of microphones, because microphones work on the same principle as headphones, except one is “input ‘in’”, meaning you get vibration and music moving the diaphragm, it changes the electrical signal, and so on.
So instead of the goal of hearing what the recording engineers and producers hear, with Pure Monster Sound, I wanted to hear through the microphone. So up close to your ear, you’re hearing Alicia’s microphone, and the one on the piano. So I think we’ve got as close to that as anybody could. There are 3 models that have Pure Monster Sound – the DNA’s, the DNA Pro’s, and the Freedom. We’re also updating our other models to have it, but this is the first Inspiration to have it. So this next level, which we call Pure Monster Sound, is a combination of technologies, because headphones are very difficult. They’re more difficult to me than speaker design, because the enclosure, the “room” that you’re in — is on your head! How much pressure, how little pressure — it all has an effect on sound quality, so we knew we had to achieve balance and address the isolation factor.
